My Creative Process

Rough Sketch
In this stage of the process I am seeking to find out what is the goal of the piece. Whether it is to advertise for an event or for simple decorative purposes this is the foundation stage that will steer and determine the final outcome of the piece. It is also important in this stage to understand who the target audience is so that I can best create a piece that will speak directly to that audience.

Refined Line work
It is in this stage that the work really begins to appear. Quick rough sketchy lines are replaced by more clean and refined ones allowing the image to take on a clearer form. During this process the details begin to show through and a foundation is made for the last stage where color and final details will be added. In this refined line work stage it is possible to make minor changes.

Final Piece
After completing a refined final outline, I begin with making several rough color tests and continue to test color combinations until I believe I have found one that best reflects and embodies the feeling and atmosphere of the piece. Depending on the image during this stage I may also add additional detail work, such as textures, that best bring the final piece to life.
Nouveau Rock
I've always had an affinity for the flowing organic nature of the 1960s and 1970s psychedelic rock posters. To me these posters captured something that I rarely see today, and that is the ability to make an advertisement that isn't just an ad but that is also a work of art. Of course these psychedelic posters very clearly took inspiration from the 1920s Art Nouveau style, which was all about capturing the beauty of nature’s flowing and intricate world. I aim to capture this mix of styles while also modernizing them for today’s world.
